Halloween Is Near!

It’s late September and you know what that means. Spooky season is almost here! Everyone needs a little decoration to spruce up their Halloween season. I wanted a little gnome to add to my collection so I decided a toilet paper gnome would be perfect. For a last minute craft idea, I think it came out adorable. It was pretty easy to make and fun too!

Supply List:

•  a roll of toilet paper
• a Halloween sock
• one large wooden bead
• two small wooden beads
• 6 inch witch hat
• black felt
• buffalo check material
• ruler
• hot glue gun
• hot glue sticks
• 4 foam bendable curlers
• 2 party favor booties
• 1 piece of chalk
• scissors
• yarn
• eye ball
• decoration of your choice

Beginning the Project

I started creating my gnome by cutting eight pieces of yarn that were about ten inches long. Depending on the thickness of your yarn, you may need to cut more. Make sure you have an even amount! Next, take half of your pieces and make loops in them. Set those aside for now because next we are making the body of the gnome.

You want to take a roll of toilet paper and simply slip one of your Halloween socks over it until the bottom is completely flat. Take the extra sock at the top and fold it inside the middle of the roll. This will be the body of your toilet paper gnome.

Heat up your glue gun and wait for it to properly heat. While it is heating up, grab your buffalo check material and your bendable curlers. Cut your buffalo check material about two inches thick and then lay your curlers on top of it. Wrap your material around the curler and hot glue it at the seam. Do this for all four curlers to make the arms and legs for your toilet paper gnome. Make sure that your fabric is tight around the curler.

Take your two small wood beads and glue them to one end of two of your curlers to make hands. Now, let’s go back to your yarn and the body. Take your hot glue gun and glue the yarn to the top of your toilet paper gnome, going around the top of it. Then, cut the loops that you made in the yarn. Your face for your gnome will be where the yarn is covering. This will be where you place the nose in a later step.

Putting Your Toilet Paper Gnome Together

Now that you have your arms, position them towards the back and glue them onto the body of your toilet paper gnome. For the legs, take the booties and place them on top of your black felt. Outline them with chalk and then cut out the pieces you outlined. Glue these to the bottom of the booties. Then, cut out more pieces of felt that are approximately two inches wide and six inches  long to cover the booties in black felt. Remember, it’s always good to have more than you need! You can always cut more fabric away, but you can never add more fabric evenly. Glue down the seam and then cut the excess felt away. I then bent the other two curlers and glued one end of each into the booties. Then, I glued the other end of the legs to the bottom of the body of my toilet paper gnome.

Finishing Touches

Now that I have glued all of the arms and legs to the body of my toilet paper gnome, I can finish him up with a few spooky details. I took my large wood bead and glued it on in the middle of his face to make a cute little nose. I took my six inch witch hat and glued it to the top of my gnome. At this point, he was looking cute, but I felt he needed something more to help him fit into the Halloween spirit. I grabbed a plastic eyeball from a previous craft I have created. Then, I placed two dabs of glue on the hands of my toilet paper gnome and placed his hands on the eyeball. I thought it would be cute to have him holding the eyeball.
