Do you love decorating your home on a budget? I do. While keeping up with the trends isn’t my thing, I do like looking at all the new seasonal decor. I was in Home Goods and I came across an isle of designer plates. What stood out to me was a lemon one. I’m redecorating my kitchen in lemons and was contemplating if I could make something similar. I knew I could make my designer lemon plate by using items I had in my craft stash. I loved the look and knew it would fit well with my new decor style. What a statement piece it would be!
Challenge Accepted!
Decoupage is one of my favorite crafts to do. I’d just purchased some beautiful lemon napkins and was waiting for that perfect project. I was definitely up for the challenge on this one and knew I could easily handle making a designer lemon plate of my own. I had a large clear glass plate that would work just right for this. I gathered the supplies I needed, and couldn’t wait to get started!
Getting It Together
The dollar store is my go-to when I want to create a budget-friendly craft. They usually have most of the supplies I need. I am sort of a Dollar store junkie you might say. I picked up the clear plate at Dollar Tree and knew I could use it sooner or later. I took the lemon napkins and separated the plys. Plys are the layers of the napkins. I only needed the top-designed layer.
Once I separated the plys, I began cutting the shapes out with a pair of scissors, cutting enough lemons out for what I needed. Knowing these were perfect for my designer lemon plate, I began to decorate the plate. Laying the clear plate upside down, I began placing the lemon napkins face down so that when you flipped the plate right side up all the beautiful colors would show. I only used two lemon napkins.
Creating The Design
While the large plate was upside down, I applied a thin coat of Mod Podge all over with a medium artist brush allowing it to dry completely. I use Mod Podge as a primer on slippery surfaces. I find it helps the paint to adhere better.
Once the Mod Podge was clear I knew it was dry. It was slightly sticky which helps hold the lemon napkin shapes in place easier. I rearranged the shapes until I came up with a design I liked.
Next, I put a thin coat of Mod Podge on top of the napkins to seal them onto the plate. I then allowed the Mod Podge to dry completely before going to my next step. My DIY designer lemon plate was one step closer to being finished!
The Painting Process
Once the Mod Podge was dried completely, I choose Apple Barrel white paint. It’s a beautiful pure white, which I knew would bring out the colors of the lemons perfectly. Using a medium artist brush I applied a coat of white paint. I made sure the paint was going on as evenly as possible. When I was satisfied with the results I allowed it to dry completely. If I missed a few spots, or if I needed to add more paint, I could once it was completely dried. My DIY designer lemon plate was shaping up nicely. It was almost complete!
The Final Steps
Once it was completely dried, I applied one more coat of Mod Podge to seal it. I let that final coat dry completely. I was excited to finally flip it over to see how my DIY designer lemon plate came out. I think I impressed myself with this one!
I genuinely love this plate, and it sits proudly in my newly decorated lemon-themed kitchen.
